Description

This Laguiole Balbach Damascus horn knife sets a 160-layer Markus Balbach blade into a solid horn handle with polished bolsters. Laguiole en Aubrac makes it with hand-filed double plates.

The horn shows cream, amber and dark brown streaks. Polished bolsters add bright points at each end. Open it, and the rippling Damascus pattern takes over.

The blade was designed and manufactured by German blacksmith Markus Balbach, known for his patented DSC (Damascus SuperClean) process. It is a roll Damascus blade made of carbon with 160 layers, hardened to 61 to 63 HRC. Double-plated means two stainless steel plates reinforce the spring, and here the plates are hand filed. The bee and spring are forged from a single piece of stainless steel. The handle is solid horn. The bolsters and spine are polished stainless steel. The blade is 4 inches (10 cm), with a 4.75 inch (12 cm) cutting edge. The knife weighs 108 g (3.8 oz). It includes a certificate of authenticity and is made in Espalion, France, within the historic Laguiole region.

Horn and Damascus make a classic pairing for a collector. You will enjoy the contrast between the natural handle and the patterned steel.
